FEMA Floodplain Maps Effective 12-17-2010 Christian County has adopted an updated and revised set of floodplain maps. These new maps are produced as part of the National Flood Insurance Program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This is the first update to these maps since 1985. It was necessary for the County to adopt these maps in order that property owners within the affected area would remain eligible to have the ability to purchase insurance through the NFIP. As a result of this remapping and increased banking regulations, property owners in affected areas are being contacted by their lenders requiring flood insurance. In an effort to assist the Christian County property owners through this process, the County has posted on its web site (www.christiancountymo.gov) a layer within the online Geographic Information System (GIS) labeled FEMA – Floodplain Effective 12-17-10. The online GIS is an interactive map that will allow citizens to view any property within the County in relation to the revised FEMA floodplain. Information pertaining to the National Flood Insurance Program can be found on FEMA’s web site at: http://www.floodsmart.gov/floodsmart/pages/about/nfip_overview.jsp If you believe your property is situated at an elevation above the floodplain we suggest contacting a licensed surveyor or engineer who can help you through the process of preparing a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) which may eliminate your need to purchase flood insurance. Information regarding this process can be found at http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/fhm/fmc_loma.shtm#0
